(Originally shot for use in my "Lakefront Trail" customized bike map for Google Maps and Earth. Find all my bike maps at [jasonpettus.com/maps].) Most of the uninterrupted 18-mile bike trail along Chicago's lakefront is self-explanatory; but it can get confusing as you hit downtown, with the trail splitting into two on either side of the Chicago River, one side more nature-oriented for exploring that side of the lakefront park, the other an urban lane that runs next to vehicular traffic on the lower level of Lake Shore Drive. These nine photos show in detail how to actually get on and off this more urban lane that crosses the river. Here: The trail at its original northern split, looking south towards the river. To your immediate left in this photo is Navy Pier, which you reach by staying on the left side of the trail; take the right fork to get to Millennium Park and the Loop.
